Brown Bear Square
A large brown bear stares calmly back, with eye-contact.
It's always a joy to get to photograph charismatic animals at close quarters. I've been fortunate enough to see and photograph bears in the wild, but never to achieve an image like this, which I took at Cabárceno Wildlife Park, in Cantabria, Spain. The park is well known for it's fantastic, large and varied bear enclosure, which enables visitors to see them exhibiting all manner of natural behaviour, from digging dens, climbing rocks, forraging, to bathing, nursing cubs and relaxing.
I'm really pleased with this intimate portrait of a bear opening up and sharing this moment with us. It speaks to me as much about calmness and vulnerability as power and strength.
This print is perfect for country or mountain lodges and homes, referencing the magic of the surrounding wilderness - or a wilderness which once was. I think it suits quieter, darker spaces, where the silence of the stare can be absorbed more passively.
