Highland Cow - Side On
A highland cow, side-on and back-lit, to create a familar outline in profile, against the black background.
This was one photo I had in mind as I began this highland cow photo project. It's achieved by positioning myself almost facing the setting sun, with the cow between me and the sun. At the time I took this, the cow was spending most of her time grazing on grass, and only rarely lifting her head to look around. So I had to be patient and wait for my moment.
I love photos like this, which don't show all the details of the subject, yet convey the essential elements. It keeps the image visually minimal and simple, which is a common theme of my photography, and of the kind of wall art I enjoy.
This print is suited to wall art in more minimalist environments, where a lack of detail is prefered. The near-abstract rendering of this highland cow makes it suitable as a nod to a timeless subject in a clean, contemporary setting.
This photo was part of the 2024 Winter Part Art Trail; an outdoor art and cultural installation in Colorado, USA. It was also awarded an "Honorable Mention" in the reFocus World Photo Annual Photography Competition, 2025.
